Remember, if you come upon one on the road, it’s not dead. Their survival instinct is to drop down and remain motionless. Do not touch them! The smell of human scent on one can cause the mothers to abandon them.
Rather, try prodding them off the road with a stick. If you HAVE to touch them, wear scentless gloves or smear your hands with mud first. The whitetail deer is naturally born scent free. Getting odor on them can mean a slow starving death.
