My Favourite Things

AKA Julie Andrews**

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favourite things.

Cadillac’s and cataracts, and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favourite things.

When the pipes leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favourite things,
And then I don’t feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favourite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no need for sinnin’,
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’,
And we won’t mention our short, shrunken frames,
When we remember our favourite things.

When the joints ache,
When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I’ve had,
And then I don’t feel so bad.

Originally Friends in My Circle;
AKA Girls/ The Gals /Women in My Circle

When I was little,
I used to believe in the concept of one best friend,
and then I started to become a woman.

And then I found out that if you allow your heart to open up,
the gods would show you the best in many friends.

One friend is needed when you’re going through things with your man.
Another friend is needed when you’re going through things with your mom.

Another will sit beside you in the bleachers as you delight in your children and their activities.
Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.

One friend will say, “Let’s cry together,”
another, “Let’s fight together,”
another, “Let’s walk away together.”

One friend will meet your spiritual need,
another your plant fetish,
another your love for movies,
another will be with you in your season of confusion,
another will be your clarifier,
another the wind beneath your wings.

But whatever their assignment in your life,
on whatever the occasion,
on whatever the day,
or wherever you need them to meet you with their running shoes on and hair pulled back,
or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself .
those are your best friends.

It may all be wrapped up in one woman,
but for many, it’s wrapped up in several…
one from Grade Two,
one from high school,
several from your university years,
a couple from old jobs,
on some days your mother,
on some days your neighbour,
on others, your sisters,
and on some days, your daughters.

So whether they’ve been your friend for 40 minutes or 40 years,
pass this on to the women that have been placed in your life
to make a difference.

* Wailing Wall

A CBC journalist in Jerusalem heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, everyday for a long, long time.So she went to check it out.She went to the Wall and there he was walking slowly up to the holy site. She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane in a very slow fashion, she approached him for an interview.
“I’m Martha Smith from CBC.Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?
“About 60 years”
“60 years!That’s amazing!What do you pray for?”
“I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and Muslims.I pray for all the hatred to stop and I pray for all our children to grow up in safety and friendship.”
“How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?”
“Like I’m talking to a f*ck*ng wall!”

It was a cold, dark, stormy night. The storm had come quickly.
They were together in the house…just the two of them.
Each time the thunder boomed he watched her jump.
She looked across the room and admired his strong appearance…and wished that he would take her in his arms, comfort her and protect her from the storm.
Suddenly, with a pop, the power went out…
She screamed…
He raced to the sofa where she was cowering.
He didn’t hesitate to pull her into his arms.
He knew this was a forbidden union and expected her to pull back, and was surprised when she didn’t resist but instead clung to him.
The storm raged on…
They knew it was wrong…Their families would never understand. So consumed were they in their fear that they heard no opening of doors… just the faint click of a camera…CLICK HERE
